I used these by first cutting the siding to the size of a wooden block that sits flat against the house's plywood for better anchoring. After caulking around the block (make sure your block is thicker than the widest lap of your siding, 1 inch will do), I attached the hanging brackets to the blocks. What a beautiful addition to the facade of my new home.The hangers are perfect for two important reasons:1.) They are a very sturdy cast iron and have virtually no flex. Look at the size of my 12" pot hanging baskets! They're huge! And they are watered everyday. That's a lot of weight. But not a single sag in the hangers at all. And no rust or fading!! They've been up about 3 months.2.) They are the longer 16" length arms that can accommodate large hanging baskets without them being squished up against the house. My hanging baskets have grown so well and barely skim the wall. Most you will find are 12" arms. This is probably the longest and best you can find for the money. Also, I bought heavy duty zip ties and tied the basket hooks onto the hangers. Hey, it's not completely theft proof but if a thief in the night had to fumble with these baskets too much, he would probably just leave them alone after a minute or two.Do not hesitate on buying these. You can do this yourself with a simple block of spare wood, some sandpaper and paint, a utility knife and good 2 1/2 inch outdoor black screws (I didn't feel the screws provided were sturdy enough or long enough so I hit the HD store and picked up some good star head construction screws for like $7/lb). The results are amazing. Now I just have to figure out what I'm going to do during the winter. I could just take the hooks down and leave the white blocks there all bare or I could hang thing like those oversized Christmas light bulbs or ornaments from the hooks. Or even big fluffy wreaths! The possibilities are endless. Highly recommend and I am a very picky person. Not a single negative e comment about these. A+++
